Kindergarten create President stick puppets

I have had the classes create stick puppet presidents several times in the past. They turned out far better than any we've done. 
Someone had given me the black yarn that we used on Lincoln's beard and it was hey smash hit. It is remarkable that as the faces and bodies are assembled on the stick the puppets always come to life and begin to talk to each other.  We were also able to discuss the art of puppetry and discuss performance art and puppet shows.

Kindergarten has patriotic themes

 We have had some fun with the patriotic themes in February creating flags, Liberty statues, and stick puppets of Lincoln and Washington for president's day. The kids are getting pretty good at following more complicated directions and filling in the blanks. They were able to do alternating stripes for the flags and most breezed through the stars. Those that had a bit of trouble still managed some pretty good stars. They were concerned that the examples did not have faces and put faces on all the puppets and the liberty lady. She even has her torch.

Doing stick puppets is always fun especially when the students are able to embellish them and make them unique. This project was no exception. Half of the class got blue paper and a George Washington head, the other half black paper and an Abraham Lincoln head. They were to color the face then assemble the puppet from the hat down on a wide crafts stick. When most of the class had completed that stage, I posed the question "what do you think about adding arms to the presidents?" and off they went. Not only did they add arms but many decided that feet and shoes were in need as well.
The project gives them a chace to work with cutting and gluing but lets them create a more individual project than just giving them the pieces. By the way, all the puppets were immediately chatting with one another. Funny how that works out.
